Several factors influence the longevity and the outcome of your new finger tattoo. Firstly is the large variance in the skin texture and thickness in and around the fingers. In a very small area the epidermis, dermis and subdermis rapidly change their structure and in order for a tattoo to look even and uniform then the ink needs to be tattooed in the same layer of skin, at the same depth. With fingers this is near impossible due to the inherent variances. Secondly is the design itself. In order to be a successful design then the fingers should be viewed as broken up into individual sections. For example if you look at any of your fingers then each knuckle dissects the finger into an area that has 4 different panels on it - Front,back and two sides. If you treat each of these as a panel for a small tattoo then immediately there is an increase in the longevity of your design. If your chosen design runs through from one panel into the next then there is a greater risk of the ink not being held in place. Third is the fact that the fingers are constantly moving, flexing, rubbing against each other. They are out in the sun far more than any other body part. You are (hopefully) washing your hands several times a day and all this movement means that the skin is constantly breaking down and regenerating, which is not good for your tattoo. Another factor to consider is the immediate aftercare of a tattoo. This applies to all tattoos but especially to finger tattoos. To ensure the best result then you should always listen to the advice of your tattoo professional. Generally as little movement as possible in the area to allow the new tattoo to heal in place and avoid any possible infection or skin damage from the sun or harsh chemicals.  Be aware that in order for your finger tattoo to continue to look good you should be prepared for touch ups every 8 to 12 months. A lot of tattoo artists will not entertain finger tattoos because of the possibility of bad reviews about the tattoo. For a long time our shop would not tattoo fingers unless the potential client was already heavily tattooed and was a regular client. This way it is possible to touch up the finger tattoos the next time they are in to get some more work done. If you are looking at a lifetime of topping up your finger tattoos to keep them looking good then this can be an expensive exercise! As a last point we are more than happy to tattoo your fingers as long as it is a considered choice.
