Broadly speaking Tattoo artists use various sizes and types of needles for different styles and effects. Fine lines are essentially achieved with the smaller groupings of needles to achieve “fine” lines.
We will use finer needles in much of our work when a higher level of detail is required. This might include highly detailed portrait work or it could simply be a small, discreet word on the wrist.
In the last few years a fine line tattoo style has evolved whereby extremely small subject matter is tattooed with very high level of detail, giving the work an initial wow factor of what can be technically achieved. An example might be the Lion finger tattoo on Cara Delevingne. Whilst this tattoo is a good demonstration of what is achievable it should be noted that fingers are not a good place for this type of tattoo! (For more on finger tattoos see our page on this site).
Another fine line style growing in popularity is the highly ornamental, decorative work consisting of geometric lines and small dots, stars, fleur de lys and filigree etc. Here at Hidden City all our artists are expert in the use of the finest available needles and we will work with you to create your own unique piece of art to perfectly compliment your style.
